The phrase, “Las las, everybody go dey alright,” has become a national anthem for coping mechanisms or resilience in Nigeria whenever things go south.
As a therapist, I’ve observed that in the 21st century, couples face a variety of challenges that can lead to relationship difficulties and ultimately, living separate lives under the same roof. These challenges include increased pressure to achieve professional and personal success, the fast-paced nature of modern life, changing societal expectations, and the prevalence of technology and social media. In addition, couples may have different communication styles, values, and expectations, which can create misunderstandings and lead to feelings of disconnection. These factors, among others, can contribute to the breakdown of relationships and lead to couples drifting apart from each other.
Though these reasons are complex and multifaceted, by understanding them, individuals and couples can work to address these issues and strengthen their relationships by taking proactive steps I have highlighted below.
By following these tips, couples can avoid either drifting apart, separating, and ultimately divorcing but maintain a strong, healthy relationship in the 21st century.
